Good question. The federal government does not require auto insurance. Insurance for your car is regulated by each state. Some states require that you maintain auto insurance on any registered vehicle while others do not mandate insurance. In NY you are required to maintain PIP coverage. This is commonly referred to as “No Fault”. No fault means that no matter who was at fault in the accident, your policy will pay for your medical bills if you were injured. Hope this helps.

The federal govt. does not require auto insurance. Auto insurance is regulated at the state level. With the exception of the state of New Hampshire, every state has at least a state minimum liability coverage requirement. Some states also require medical coverage (aka PIP), and some states require uninsured motorist coverage as well.
