In theory they are the same, but in practice they are slightly different. Homeowners insurance is designed for the person who owns the home and has an insurable interest in the actual structure of the home as well as the contents, because they primarily live there year round.

Renters insurance is for the person who owns the contents, but has no insurable interest in the actual structure itself. Both of them are considered property policies, meaning that they cover real property and provide reimbursement for losses. They both also cover liability, or payment for actions that may occur at the residence.
