    You may buy into Medicare even if you do not have enough work credits. This may be cheaper than signing up for an individual plan. Contact the centers for Medicare to determine your eligibility & costs. If you decide to go that route, you will then want to look at adding a Medigap plan or Advantage plan.

    You are not eligible for Medicare if you have never worked and not paid Social Security taxes. You have to have worked at least 10 years or 40 quarters and paid Social Security taxes to be eligible for Medicare.
