To get medicare you either need to turn 65, be on disability for 2 years or have certain health conditions such as ESRD or ALS. There are plans on the health exchange that you can purchase, and you may qualify for a tax credit and cost-sharing to help with the cost depending on your household income. If you are healthy and do not qualify for a tax credit for an ACA compliant plan there are also short term health insurance options that could cover you until you turn 65, depending on what state you reside in.

No, your eligibility is based on you not your spouse.

As a speaker for “Money Smart Week”, I know that many consumers confuse their Medicare and Social Security claiming strategy options.

“Money Smart Week” occurs in April every year to help consumers better manage their personal finances. This includes all facets of personal finance. All educational events are free. I would encourage you to visit http://www.moneysmartweek.org to see if any events are planned for your area that might be helpful as you plan for your future.

No. If you’re only 62, you can only get Medicare coverage if you’re on social security disability (for at least 24 consecutive months) or have end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

For the most part, spousal factors only come in to play for Medicare coverage in relation to enrollment eligibility (e.g. special enrollment periods) and not the coverage itself.

I hope the information is helpful. If you would like assistance with Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans for your spouse turning 65, feel free to contact me via the “contact me” button next to my picture.
