How Can I Find Out If My Mother Had Life Insurance With A Company?

Is there anyway to find out if my mother who passed away 4/21/16 had a life insurance policy with a company. I checked her bank statement but she might have paid with credit card or money order.

My mother told me approx 1 year prior in a voice message she cancelled her existing policy (not who it was with) and went with Mutual of Omaha. She never gave me a copy of policy or a policy number so when I called Mutual of Omaha and they searched her social security number they said they had no record.

These occurences are actually pretty common. If mutual of omaha doesn’t have any records of the policy, then perhaps your mother took out a policy with another company.

One strategy we’d recommend is to go thru banking records, and see if there were any payments made to an insurance company. If you see a company that was receiving payments, then perhaps this is the insurance company your Mother had referenced.

Very sorry for the loss of your mother. It will be difficult to find the policy but impossible. There are a few things you can do.

The first place to try is the NAIC, National Association of Insurance, their website: https://naic.org/state_web_map.htm can put you in touch with your states Department of Insurance or DOI, to see if they have a life insurance was policy filed under the insured’s name in the state. Not all policies are filed unfortunately. If you feel the death claim may have been paid try https://missingmoney.com/ or https://unclaimed.org/ . Both of these sites are free searches as well. I will say their odds have been calculated at about 600 to 1 in having a successful search. These are the same odds as winning $100 on a Powerball ticket. If you have no luck on these three sites for free, there is another good site that does charge a search fee of approximately $75.00 by the MIB Solutions website https://www.mib.com/lost_life_insurance_howto.html . This website boasts a 30% success rate of finding a lost life insurance policy by searching the medical information that was accessed by an underwriter when the policy was purchased. You may want to avoid life settlement agents as there is a high risk of being scammed. Certainly not all life settlement companies are scams by any stretch of the imagination; just do your homework before paying their fees.

This is a difficult task but if the face amount is high enough, it is worth the extra effort.
    Condolences and good luck.

That is a great question, and one that we get a lot. My prayers and sympathies are with you and your family. Some other ways to see are to go through her old receipts, safety deposit boxes (if she had them) and her close friends – they might have discussed it at some point. You may also have luck contacting MIB (Medical Information Bureau) – they are a clearinghouse for insurance information used by insurers to gather claim information, and they have a “lost policies ” section that may help you in your search. They are the industry giant, so it is very likely they can be helpful. Try them, okay? Thank you for your question; I pray your heart is comforted and held by our Lord in peace, and I pray you are successful in your search. Happy hunting!

My sympathies on the loss of your mother. Unfortunately, if your mother indeed cancelled her existing policy, and Mutual of Omaha does not show her as a client, she probably does not have a policy with Mutual of Omaha. Can you find payments made to the past company in an older checkbook? It may be possible that she has a reduced paid up policy with them.
