Getting married enables people to move from two single policies to a husband wife policy, or from a parent and child policy to a family policy. Every carrier prices these combination policies differently. In the individual market there may not be a big difference in the rates you might pay.
When purchasing coverage through employers there could be a large premium cost savings. Many employer elect to pay a portion of the spousal premium, although this practice is becoming less common.
