The best disability insurance policies will have a benefit period to age 65 or 67. Some carriers like Lloyds of London will go even higher. If there is significant health history, or if the insured wants a cheaper policy, then the benefit period can be 2, 5 or even 10 years. Keep in mind that if you have a 5 year benefit period, but you become disabled at age 65, your policy won’t actually pay for five more years. Depending on your policy, it will only pay until age 65 or 67–not until age 70.

Disability policies can vary from ending at 65 up to age 75 depending on the carrier and what their contact states for an end date. Some plans reduce benefit or length of payout past age 65. Depending on the company you choose your payout could go anywhere from 2 years to lifetime.
