To add to the previous poster, the added benefit to a 12 month policy is that your rates can not go up until the end of the policy year (unless you buy a new car) and you often can still pay in monthly or bi-monthly payments. Of course if rates go down you will miss out until the end of your policy year, but rate decreases are much less common that rate increases as everything goes up in cost!

Short answer: certainly. However this answer will vary from state to state and even company to company. But most of the time, 6 months is the standard length of time for an auto policy. 12 month policies are also very common, and the standard in some states. Many companies will even give you the choice between having a 6 month policy or 12 months.
