Sudden and accidental. Remember those words. If your loss is neither sudden, nor accidental, no policy will cover it. Weather is sudden. We don’t know when a storm may come. If there are damages from the storm, no one planned them, so they are accidental. Mold is not sudden. Intentional damage is not accidental. If you will use those two words as guidelines in filing a claim, you will have your own answer most of the time.

A homeowner’s policy covers damage caused by specified perils. These perils are basically sudden events that destroy property such as fire. Water damage caused by seepage over an extended period of time doesn’t fit with the definition of a specified peril. Mold is the same sort of situation. The damage isn’t sudden. Mold damage might be covered if a pipe ruptures in a wall and the damage isn’t detected quickly.
